OC Transpo release on two-day free transit service
Rather than two days of free service, why not give 365-days-a-year good service?
OC Transpo, by its own admission, is missing on reliability.
But worse than that, its bus fleet is lacking basic components of a good system. In addition to reliability, OC Transpo is short 19 buses as it kicks into its historic revamping of its fleet called New Ways To Bus.
Among its problems are a lack of available buses, construction delays, a driver shortage, aging buses and mechanical problems. All this is made worse by delays in delivering e-buses. Those e-buses are controversial in that some cold weather transit systems are reporting range woes due to not enough battery capacity in cold weather.
LRT: A Vital Issue Of Open Government
Also due to aging buses, repairs are increasing as is the severity of those mechanical problems. Accordingly, working newer buses are being over-driven to compensate for old buses in the shop being repaired.
But here’s the point.
Why do you start a promotional campaign when the service is not working well? New Ways To Bus should have an excellent fleet and timely service to demonstrate a system potential riders would want to take.
What Transpo is promoting is a bad service. And that will only discourage new riders from taking transit.
The best advertisement for a product is a good product. Transpo is promoting a faulty service.
That needs to change.

It’s a shame that they didn’t choose to do this during the Tulip festival. Something which brings out hundreds of thousands to enjoy the flowers and the city. They could have chosen the date so strategically when people are excited and happy and their memories of OC transport would have been good they would have got much more use from the transit system too and so much good will
There is still a budget hole to fill and they are, rightly so, counting on the tourist dollars that the Tulip Festival generates..
