Rail Runs Successfully In Ottawa
Circa 1938 we see a successful rail system operating in Ottawa.
In the video below, trolley cars, not light rail, plied the streets of the nation’s capital.
The wires no doubt stood up to ice storms and the like.
It wasn’t pretty, but it worked.

Thanks for the video. 9:40 of relaxation on a Monday morning. Back to the 1930s when people still told time using sundials, golf was played in 2-piece suits, maniacs weren’t racing their cars down the streets running red lights, and people didn’t have their faces buried in cell phones. Made me remember that “progress” is a 4-letter word.
Has the world we inhabit really made progress? In medicine and food safety but as a society overall?Transportation in this excellent clip was good comfortable and reliable, people seemed to be enjoying themselves sufficiently fed, the atmosphere safe and secure and mostly polite and considerate of each other.
Bruce. I don’t know if you’re a music person or not but your query captures the theme of a Paul Simon song called “The Boy in the Bubble”. Yes, we have advanced technologically, but as a species, no, we do not seem to be able to step forward. By the way, the version by Peter Gabriel is more solemn and grabs the true essence of the song.
Wow – that was a trip down memory lane. Not that I was around in the 30’s but many of the locations were still familiar. It would be interesting to see it redone in the present day. How many of those spots still stand and/or can be identified with the subsequent encroaching “development”? I was surprised at how many I remember that my children won’t.
The aerial shots were certainly eye-opening as were those of the Ex -.ain’t nobody having that much fun at Lansdowne these days or likely ever again!
