The Night Commish Is Alive and Living … Somewhere
Hey, lookie here.
Our nightlife commissioner, Mathieu Grondin, has re-appeared. Maybe it’s the longer nights that are getting him out.
Or maybe he has been using the National Capital Commission’s floating sauna. Taxpayers’ money at work.
Well the commish has come up with a new idea … a website devoted to showing Ottawans where there is nightlife. Who would have thought of that? Original thinking at its best. The finest detective work.
And you know when people think of nightlife and frolicking, the City of Ottawa immediately comes to mind. I wonder if Grondin included those punchy planning-and-environment-committee meetings as part of his municipally approved fun guide. Oh maybe not. P and E meetings are just during the day unless they stretch into the night when those always-captivating development charges are debated. Can ya dig it?
No word if the city will be regulating nightlife. You know, 37.5-per-cent fun, 21-per-cent dancing, one drink a night, 15-per-cent laughing, six-per-cent crying … it goes on.
Anyway, here’s the release on fun from the mirth-makers at Ottawa City Hall:

The City of Ottawa Nightlife Office has launched the Ottawa at Night website to help build awareness for the city’s nightlife, to promote nightlife safety and to assist nightlife businesses.
The site caters mostly to individuals who want to plan a night out. You can use the Venues directory to find nightlife spots with the vibe you’re looking for. It includes a list of 99 venues that offer attractions at night under six categories:
Cinemas
Live music
Pubs/bars
Theatres
Nightclubs
Comedy clubs
Venues are further categorized according to location – east, west, south, central and rural – and by 17 genres or “vibes” such as Alternative, Hip-hop, Karaoke, Drag, Stand-Up and Folk/Country.
Safety first
Staying safe is the first step to enjoying a great night out. Everyone should check out the Safety section for tips and resources that include:
A Safety Guide for people going out at night.
A Safety Guide for people who work in nightlife venues.

Business focus
For venue owners and other nightlife related businesses, there are links to the City’s website, providing background about the Nightlife Commissioner’s Office, and to resources and information. Topics include:
Permits and Licenses

Hospitality, Tourism and Nightlife-Partner Organizations
Francophone Business Resources
Ottawa at Night is an initiative led by the City of Ottawa Nightlife Office, as part of the 2023-2026 Nightlife Economy Action Plan.
Venue operators who want their location included can make a request through the website. They should also check out the Ottawa at Night Safety Guide and look out for safety workshops that will benefit their employees. Registration dates and details will be posted on the site later this fall.

Why does this city site not include a list of Open Evening vendors of “safe sex” materials? Is this all a sign of government denial and / or prohibition? Is this site a front for religion? We need to know.
