And here’s another strong point from Tisch:

“You’re already seeing Canadian businesses look for new partners in Europe, in Asia and Latin America, where we have trade agreements and we have countries that actually value the alliances with us,”

Trust is a very fickle thing. It’s very difficult to achieve and takes a long time.

On the other hand, you can lose it in a second.

That’s what U.S. President Donald Trump has done. One E.U. official said recently that the world will never trust the U.S. again.

The United States expected other countries to roll over when faced with punishing U.S. tariffs. The U.S. is so myopic in its international view that it thinks America can do whatever it wants. Really? There are a lot of good people out there who love their country.

Does anyone think France or Great Britain will back down in the face of U.S. tariffs? Britain didn’t capitulate to Hitler. It’s certainly not going to with Trump.

And Canada. This country looks like a soft, polite nation that wouldn’t stand up to anyone. Historians will tell you otherwise. Canada captured Vimy Ridge in the First World War when the rest of the world could not. The army did it through courage, trust and intelligence.

There’s that trust word again.

In Canada, under that guise of nice is a tough old core that honours the country. The world and Canada won’t back down to the U.S. Proud people just aren’t made that way.

And now Trump and the U.S. have a trust problem. That’s almost impossible to repair.
