Tierney Possesses Speed-Camera Truth: WHOPPER WATCH
Coun. Tim Tierney is hoping to “debunk the myths” around speed cameras and suggested tweaking the automated enforcement program rather than scrapping it in the face of looming provincial legislation.
Beacon Hill-Cyrville Councillor Tim Tierney as translated by the Ottawa Citizen
The province doesn’t care about Tim “Showboat” Tierney.
Queen’s Park barely gives notice to the whole city of Ottawa which consistently fails to elected any of Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative MPPs.
Unlikely the province gives a damn about what an obscure councillor from Ottawa’s east end thinks. Ford has bigger fish to fry than the opinion of a legislative minnow.
Tierney is just trying to reap political capital from the controversial speed-camera file. And the Citizen is looking for an easy headline on a slow news day which Tierney is only too eager to provide. The showboat from Beacon Hill-Cyrville has been happy to oblige the media with naming snowplows, tossing traffic safety cones and getting a Nickelback tattoo for anyone who really cared.
So “Showboat” might be interested in speed cameras (at least peripherally) but Tierney is most interested in free press for his re-election purposes and future mayoral aspirations down the road. And we should listen to Tierney because he possesses the truth which will “debunk the myths” surrounding speed cameras. Tierney should also try to debunk the myth about how much the city enjoys all that revenue from speed-camera fines.
It’s all politics and not much public policy. But then Tierney learned all this photo op policy-on-the-run at the knee of the master of cheap publicity, Jim “Showboat” Watson, who never saw a grip-and-grim photo he didn’t love.
If you like this kind of public policy, be sure to vote for Tim Tierney. He’ll appreciate it and we’re lucky to have him and his sole proprietorship of the truth on speed cameras.

This article is very misleading. Tierney is doing this work as part of his volunteer role as 1st VP of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. All its leaders are required be currently seated elected municipal leaders.
A more interesting question is why didn’t Mayor Sutcliffe join 20 other Ontario Mayors in their joint letter to the Premier?
The letter called on the government to tweak the rules instead of eliminating cameras as a tool to fight speeding. It isn’t a very controversial request. Yet it apparently was beyond Sutcliffe’s leadership comfort zone.
And speaking of a slow news day, the biggest event of the day so far has been awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, who is responsible for helping oust an autocratic government in Venezuela, like the one DumbOld Trumpf is building, with a democratic system, like the one DumbOld Trumpf is trying to destroy. The content of the 3-minute speech given by the young Norwegian who made the announcement is quite pointed. Hopefully Norway will suffer no ill effects from something as simple as making a decision the president of the US doesn’t like.
In view of Councillor Tierney’s penchant to support contests for the naming of snowplows and tossing traffic cones for show, one has to wonder about the true intentions/objectives of his comments regarding speed cameras. As for what may or may not be ” … beyond (Mayor) Sutcliffe’s leadership comfort zone”, is was a campaigning Mark Sutcliffe who promised to plant one million trees during this term in office. That promise will obviously not be met. More recently, Mayor Sutcliffe has promised to end homelessness for the city’s younger demographic by 1930. The currently favoured betting line regarding that promise is that it will likely meet the same fate as the one million tree promise. Consequently, it seems safe to conclude that birds of a feather most likely flock together?
