Tierney Should Take His Legal Medicine: BENN
Former councillor George Darouze acknowledged that when he attended a council or committee meeting by video call whilst driving, he was in contravention of the law.
After being publicly rebuked he self reported his transgression and publicly apologized for not setting a good example. He was fined per the Highway Traffic Act.
With that as a precedent, councillors Tim Tierney and Matthew Luloff should stop off at the Ottawa Police Service headquaters and self-report their transgressions. They should accept whatever fine is assessed and pay it out of personal funds, rather than their ward budgets. Finally, they should issue an apology for not setting a good example.
If they don’t, then council should pass a resolution of censure to ensure that council will not countenance sophomoric behaviour by elected officials and to let the public know that just because they don’t like something doesn’t mean they can flout the law.
Finally, it is long past time for city staff and council to consider the inconvenience they inflict on residents when they allow contractors to leave congestion-inducing obstacles in place when there is no work under way.
Ron Benn, a finance executive, has been a member of the Centrepointe Community Association for the better part of three decades.
