Toronto Ponders Cheaper Transit Fares
Would this work in Ottawa?
—
The TTC hasn’t touched the standard cost to ride a subway, streetcar or bus in Toronto since its last fare increase in 2023, but riders could actually soon be paying less to hop on the network during certain times.
The City is considering adopting new “special event transit rates” that, when applied concurrently with higher parking fees, would hopefully encourage more people heading to major venues to take public transportation rather than their personal vehicles.

It’s called supply and demand. You lower the price and more people use the product. Which one is kind of the idea behind public transit in the first place.
But make it free and it becomes a homeless shelter
This is an excellent solution to a growing problem. It’s simple and should be easy to implement. Ottawans are quick to point out Toronto’s flaws, however, if Ottawa hired more people who know how to solve problems it might finally be able to make some strides forward rather than progressing at a one-step forward, two-steps back pace.
The amount of the fare will always be secondary to the question of whether public transit will take me from where I am to where I want to go, in a reasonable amount of time. There is no point on getting on a bus/LRT train if it isn’t taking me to where I want to go, irrespective of what the fare is.
Until those with the responsibility for overseeing city staff grasp this fundamental concept, public transit in Ottawa will continue to limp along, losing tens of millions of dollars a year.
Ron is correct. Even if transit were “free”, I would never take the bus/LRT to the airport from Bells Corners. The OCTranspo travel planner shows the fastest time at 1.5 hrs, taking 4 busses. That’s three transfers with luggage. And 1.5 hrs is really an estimate. Who knows if the bus will show or be late.
