Trudeau Finds His Spine, Krugman: QUOTABLE
“After an initial, embarrassing groveling visit to Mar-a-Lago by Justin Trudeau, Canadians seem to have found their spine.”
Former New York Times columnist and Nobel-prize-winning economist Paul Krugman
Krugman in his Substack column Krugman Wonks Out said what certainly crossed your agent’s mind when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau kissed president-elect Donald Trump’s ring in Florida immediately after Trump’s tariff threat.
Trump is trying to bully us so the prime minister tries to placate him. Grovelling to a bully only brings more bullying. Wrong, Justin, wrong.
Here are a few points from the wise Krugman’s article:
- Canada is on Trump’s enemies list;
- Canada will respond with tariffs on such products as Florida orange juice and Kentucky bourbon;
- Canada is in a stronger position than the U.S. if a trade war ensues from Trump’s tariffs;
- U.S. producers will lose more sales to Canada than Canadians to U.S.;
- Trump won’t put tariffs on Canadian oil because of the price effect in the U.S. Midwest;
- Canadian officials are considering weaponizing oil if U.S. tariffs are applied to Canada;
- A trade war with Canada might not turn out well for Trump.
Suddenly when you read Krugman’s short piece, you begin to understand the strong position Canada is in if a trade war breaks out.

Mr. Krugman’s initial statement about how to deal with a bully is correct, kissing rings just sets the kisser up for more bullying. The best way to deal with a bully is to bully them right back whether this entails painting them into a corner on an an intellectual level, or just punching them in the nose.
