What’s In It For Doug Ford? THE VOTER
One of the things we need to do to get Ontario Premier Doug Ford to take action on the mess at Ottawa City Hall is to clearly demonstrate why it’s in his interest to do so. What does he gain?
On the flip side of that, we have to show him the downside of not taking any action.
When he looks at Ottawa, he sees a community that has, by and large, elected non-Tory MPs and MPPs so he doesn’t have any significant political or electoral gains in upending the City of Ottawa’s administration. He has a mayor in Mark Sutcliffe with whom he gets along very well. He also has had friends around the council table, one of whom has just made the move to his team at Queen’s Park. Unfortunately, we can’t look to that new MPP for any support since he was a party to most of the problems we seek to correct.
The issues that distress us at City Hall have little or no resonance outside the city boundaries. All-in all, there’s nothing that has moved these concerns to the top, or even onto the front page, of Ford’s to-do list.
The task now is to be able to reach Ford in a way that turns his sights on the Ottawa administration, both political and bureaucratic, and pushes him to take action on the chaos that reigns at the Laurier Bunker. This will require bringing in allies and ‘not-the-usual-suspects’ to support us to put a clear case for intervention on the table.
