Where Was Leiper On The Convent? WHOPPER WATCH

“The building is a treasure in our community. It is absolutely irresponsible that the building has been allowed to degrade to this point where there are fundamental questions around its structural integrity.”

Kitchissippi Councillor Jeff Leiper

So what did you do about it, councillor?

Wait for a reporter to call so you can express your outrage?

It has been no secret that Les Soeurs de la Visitation convent has been purposeless and decaying for decades. Your agent wrote about it two decades ago in the Ottawa Citizen. Carried on a bit of a crusade to keep it useful. No such luck.

And opined about its fate and ran a bunch of pictures from the convent in an effort to generate interest. No one bit.

Were not the wooden braces on the wall and boarded up windows not a sign that it was just being left to rot? Now it has serious foundation problems and mountains of tax arrears. Way da go.

Odd Weather Alters City Spring Operations

Where have you been, Jeff Leiper? The convent didn’t just sneak up behind you and bite you on the butt. It has been around for awhile.

So what’s going on, oh mighty planning committee czar? All those condos you’ve had built in Westboro as planning committee chairman and where’s the new parkland to serve the inhabitants? There’s some at the convent. Condo dwellers are people, too.

Some have talked about it as a rep movie theatre there though its rooms are probably too small and unpaid taxes are probably too large.

If it has been “absolutely irresponsible” to allow the convent to decay, what is it when the planning committee chairman had no plan for a city treasure — one of the most historic buildings in Ottawa?

Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. That’s all we here from Ottawa City Hall. We will fix the O-Train. No fix. We can afford Lansdowne 2.0. Yeah, right. We’ll get to the bottom of these potholes. Yes, when you car becomes mired in one.

But we don’t even here a virtued signal from Leiper until it is too late for the convent. Ain’t that a shame. Words, words, words, words.

So what’s your plan, councillor? Weep until it is knocked down. Replace it with a high-rise condo sans parkland? What’s your plan, powerful Westboro representative? Answer reporters phone calls?

Yes, it is a shame that it has been allowed to rot without the councillor acting.

Here’s an idea. Rather than crying about it, how about doing something about it.

Actions rather than words. What a novel concept.

The convent is not along one of Leiper’s bike routes, so he didn’t see it decaying in front of everyone else’s eyes.

Too late to the party once again. In the time I have live in Ottawa many architectural disgraces have occurred, the demolition of the Daly Building, the Chateau Laurier expansion, the re-imagining of Lansdowne Park, to name but a few. These were historical buildings, some of which sat on a once-beautiful pieces of land. It seems “intensification” has joined the growing list of 4-letter words.
