Troster Angry About Late Fireworks

Like many of you, I was woken at 11pm last night by unexpected fireworks.

Councillors were not notified in advance of Canadian Heritage’s decision to let off the Canada Day fireworks that remained unexploded on Lemieux Island. They decided that it was safer to let them off, than to try and retrieve them safely. But they did so with no notice to residents, which was unacceptable.

This was a decision apparently made by city staff without consulting the community or local councillors, in an effort to not overwhelm the Bluesfest site at LeBreton Flats. I share your anger and frustration about this and am working to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

Thank you for writing to me about this.

Puh .. . leeze! The current group of city councillors has always, when discussing issues that have an element of safety involved (to wit, no more red turns on red lights, Ms Troster), always attempt to choose what they feel is the safest option. So, ” decided that it was safer to let them off, than to try and retrieve them”. Who are the subject matter experts, and why has Ms Trsoster decided to do a 180 degree turn in this instance? Is this an election year or something?

Further to my previous comment I just read a quote from Ariel Troster concerning “her” fireworks fiasco. She noted “I was fast asleep and woke up in a panic”. And herein lies a problem. If we are being governed by city councillors whose lives are ruled by emotions rather than reason, how effective can they be once they hold leadership roles? Let’s take a little jaunt across the pond for a moment to Kiev (old-time spelling), and imagine she had woken up to the same noises there. In that case Troster would have had justification to be concerned. In Ottawa, not so much. (Note to Ms Troster who seems to have many jittery concerns. Rule # 1 of problem solving – leave your emotions at the door.)
