The Ottawa Police Service is investigating the death of a two-year-old child following an incident on Friday evening.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on May 8, officers responded to reports of a missing child in the area of the Kichi Zibi Mikan Parkway. When emergency crews arrived, the child was unaccounted for.

A coordinated search was immediately launched involving multiple Ottawa Police resources, including Neighbourhood Resource Team officers, Marine Dive Team members, the Air Support Unit (ABLE1), Tactical officers, and assistance from the Gatineau Police Service.

This is a release from the Ottawa Police Service.

Approximately 40 minutes after the initial call, the child was spotted in the Ottawa River by the Ottawa Police Air Support Unit. First responders immediately brought the child ashore and began lifesaving efforts before the child was transported to hospital. Tragically, the child was later pronounced deceased at hospital.

Our hearts are with the child’s family, loved ones, witnesses, and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident. This was an incredibly difficult call for everyone involved, including the first responders who worked tirelessly in the search-and-rescue efforts.

As is standard practice in incidents involving the death of a young child, the Ottawa Police Service’s Homicide Unit has carriage of the investigation, alongside the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit.

Support services have been made available for the child’s family and the emergency personnel involved in the response.

The investigation remains ongoing.
