Sell Your Home, While You Can: THE VOTER

I can see a whole lot of homes coming on the market in the near future as people try to get out before the zoning changes become widely known.

They may take a bit of a loss if there’s suddenly a glut of housing stock available but nothing like the bath they’ll take when the character of the neighbourhood is erased a few years down the road.

Stable neighbourhoods will become a thing of the past which will undermine the city as a whole.

But the developers will be happy and that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

If people do decide to move before the new zoning come into effect, where exactly will they go?
While this level of infill may be something that developers like, it is being driven by planners and politicians who have adopted the mantra of “build everything, everywhere, all at once”. Planners and politicians don’t know how to react to the housing crisis in Canada and since they are by nature against new neighbourhoods (referred to as sprawl) they want to cram in as much infill housing as possible. This is not unique to Ottawa but is happening in cities all over Canada and the U.S., hence there will be few places to which once can move unless you want to live in a small town or rural area. Sometime in the future, people will look back and wonder how Canadians purposely destroyed the liveability of their cities in a country with so much open space. Do we really think that we can increase our population so significantly without our cities having to expand to accommodate the additional people? While people love to travel to Europe and Asia, how often do you hear people coming back say that they wish that they could live crammed into a small apartments like they do overseas?
