I am confused, I was unaware Jewish was a race am I misinformed? In the United States, the Supreme Court has ruled that Judaism is not a race, but rather a religion. In the case of Hornsby v. Allen, the court held that Jews are not a protected class under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Is it not xenophobic or am I going to be accused of being a member of MAGA. Of course these types are reprehensible but enquiring minds want to know so with some sense of civic could the more learned among you explain it to me. Cheers
I am a person who likes to think about concepts through images. Think of terrorists and an image of someone who resembles Bin Laden leaps to mind for many people. However, never forget that the British Empire, later re-marketed as the British CommonWEALTH was built on terrorism. The image that comes to mind when we talk about racism is generally a white Anglo male with a pot belly holding a rifle. As it turns out every country in the world contains its racist groups. Racism is a worldwide plague that never went away and never will.
Anderson, racism is a subset of bigotry and prejudice. Some people chose to use the term racist because it is more inflammatory, more damning. They are less concerned about whether the term is entirely accurate.
Back to Mike’s video. Were the people he cited in his example of the distant past the victims of racism or bigotry? Does the choice of word really matter? Or is it the character (or lack thereof) that matters?
The same applies to the resistance to some of the residents of the neighbourhood where the Larga Baffin short term housing complex is slated to be built. Are they upset that there will be a regular shuttle service moving the short term residents of the facility to and from the various health care providers in Ottawa? Or are they worried that some “ne’er do wells” from northern Canada are going to somehow plunder the nearby homes? Are they worried that these people who may be readily identifiable “not from here” will somehow diminish the quality of the lives of the residents in the area, whilst seeking to improve or extend their own lives?
Let’s not focus on the choice of word. Rather, let’s focus on the character flaws of those whose actions indicate a pre-judging of a group of people who are in the city to get healthier.
Anderson – Considering Hitler killed 6 mln. Jews claiming that they were a race and most countries allowed for very limited Jewish immigration pre-WWII, particularly Canada who had a policy of “none is too many”, people have discriminated against Jews for millennia using whatever excuse was handy and worked best at the time. One time it was religion, then race and now its Zionism. The hatred that refuses to die. Whatever you want to call it, the Jewish people have had some pretty bad treatment over the years. When Mike Patton’s family was buying the house it was probably religious based (by the one neighbour). That’s why anti-Semitism is a better term because it doesn’t indicate what the prejudice/hatred is based on only to whom it is directed. In any case, Patton’s clip was not about anti-Semitism but that the same arguments that were used against Jews prior to the the 70’s (Ron – which is not that distant of a past and 1939-1945 is definitely not that distant given the enormity of what happened) are being used against the Inuit in 2024, at least by some. Some may have fought the centre strictly on the basis of zoning capability but some may have used zoning capability as a handy excuse.
