Sutcliffe Blasted On X For Extra Funding Plea

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe’s call on X for more funding for the City of Ottawa from the senior levels of government is a political disaster.

People are not buying that the senior levels of government are under-funding the City of Ottawa.

They see the LRT fiasco, the big spending on the Lansdowne failure and the over-spending on the new central library as transparent examples of poor budget discipline and incompetence.

This post is a huge blunder. These are the kind of moves that become career-enders.

How many 10s of thousands of people have been left stranded by the LRT debacle?

You can’t hide with PR what the public has experienced over and over again first-hand.

Sutcliffe is looking weak, manipulative and transparently wrong. He did not create the light-rail failure but he hasn’t fixed it either. With this PR error, he’s now become the focus of the public’s discontent with city hall incompetence.

Sutcliffe wasn’t wearing the LRT mess when he came to office, but he sure is now.

This is a bad move of epic proportions.

It is surprising that the citizens of Ottawa should care about financial mismanagement in municipal government given that in spite of the massive financial mismanagement and continuing deficits at the Federal level of government by the Liberal/NDP alliance, Ottawa remains one of the last bastions of support for the Liberal and NDP parties in Canada. While the City has misbudgeted many of its most important projects, their financial inaccuracies are nothing compared to those of the Federal government and at least there hasn’t been any major financial scandals such as Arrivescam by City Hall. If City Hall thinks things are tough now, after the next election, Ottawa is likely to experience significant cutbacks similar to the cuts Chretien and Martin had to impose in the 1990s to balance the budget.

Time to start the pool – “pick the date Ottawa declares bankruptcy”. A first for Canada.
