“The city budget is the responsibility of the mayor and council alone. By no means do I want to see a reduction in transit and the level of services that Ottawa residents receive, but ultimately this is the responsibility of the mayor and of city council, not of the federal government.”

Cabinet minister and Kanata-Carleton MP Jenna Sudds, the capital region’s senior member of Parliament

What Sudds in saying is that the city must clean up its own mess.

The city’s fiscal crisis is due to over-spending, budget guile, artificially low taxes and draining reserve funds. It’s not the responsibility of the federal government to clean up city mistakes. That will be left to Ottawa property taxpayers.

That should get Ottawans’ attention come next municipal election.
