I love this more rigorous approach to testing. No political influence visible. No artificial deadlines.
Well done
Missed by a HAIR or missed a HARE? No real passengers crowding the doors and good weather with no raincoats of strollers to delay or clog the doors? This test looks like running a car down the 417 with no traffic and saying what a wonderful well designed roadway. Sorry for the sarcasm but this is just day one in ideal conditions with new rolling stock.
What’s that saying … “A miss is as good as a mile.”? The train either passed the test or it didn’t. There is no ‘almost passed’ category. A failure is a failure.
It remains to be seen how many days it will take to produce fourteen straight days of success. Even if they now have a pass for thirteen days, if they have another miss on the next day, the clock rolls back to zero and those thirteen days count for nothing.
Bruce’s point that this exercise is not testing the train under real-life conditions is well-taken. Not very surprising though since OC Transpo management and many of their “overseers” on Council are not renowned for their connections with the real world that the rest of us inhabit.
I fear the testing will no be realistic and hence present us with surprises when the severe winter weather arrives AFTER the testing period has concluded.
The switches on this line are critical to on-time performance and were as I recall one of the key sources of faults that were supposedly rectified before this formal testing started. How the switches perform under heavy snow fall and freezing rain conditions will only be known after the line goes live for the public.
