City Creates Online Dumping Snitch Tool

One of the major fears of the new three-bag limit for refuse pickup is illegal dumping.

In many instances, when bag limits or tag-a-bag are implemented, illegal dumping becomes commonplace.

To fight that, the City of Ottawa has created an online dumping snitch tool to try to nab illegal-dumping offenders.

Typical of our city, have someone else do my work for me.

Why.not just have spy drones flying over the City? That way the City can watch out for idling cars, overgrown weeds on lawns, parking violations, stabbings in the ByWard Market, etc etc. all at the same time.

You also have to consent on the 311 form to allow your personal information be provided to the Mayor and Ward Councillor. That should make people comfortable that their privacy will be protected (sarcasm).

Great. Bad decisions at city hall force residents to rat one another out. Last time I checked it was/is 2024, 40 years beyond the tactics used in Orwell’s 1984. By the way, doesn’t the Ontario Freedom of Information Act allow citizens to determine who the rat was?

    Dan,

You don’t “have to consent” to your info being given to the mayor and councillor. You are only asked to consent to your info being shared with those two offices if you want your complaint to be copied to them by 311.

There are instances where it makes sense for a 311 complaint to be forwarded to the councillor such as a report of a pothole so they can follow it up. It saves you having to separately contact the councillor. Obviously, if you are complaining about a neighbour, it makes no sense to have your name provided as the source of the complaint if you feel there could be negative consequences.
