Curry Questions Speed-Camera ‘Money Grab’

Kanata North Councillor Cathy Curry has doubts about the purpose of the city’s speed cameras.

This is from Currie’s community newsletter:

“A new speed enforcement camera is planned to be operating on Terry Fox Drive near Kanata Highlands Public School and St. Isabel Catholic School in the coming weeks. When we met with staff who told us that it would be installed soon, they told us that the speed board that tells drivers how fast they are going would have to come down. I was not happy about this. If we put these cameras up to truly keep children safer in a school zone, why wouldn’t we also have help for drivers to know how fast they are going? They shared that the reading from the speed board isn’t as accurate as the traffic camera is at measuring speed. So, I argued some more!

The speed board will be relocated to an area further down Terry Fox, but it won’t give a reading within the speed zone that the speed camera covers. It frustrates me that we say we have the cameras up to reduce speed in a school zone but then take away the more noticeable reminders of the speed. When people tell me that the cameras are just a money grab for the city, it makes it hard to argue with that. However, at least for this one, you will have more warning and help to see how fast you are going up Terry Fox Drive.”

Thank you to C from Kanata for this heads-up.

  1. Ron Benn says:

Councillor Curry, do city staff produce reports on a regular (monthly?) basis that report the # of speeding infractions per site, with a trend line that shows whether the # of infractions is coming down, going up or staying flat? That type of report will show whether the speed cameras are effective at creating safer conditions around schools, which is their stated purpose. If staff are not producing and distributing that kind of report, tell them one needs to be created. Do not make it a request. Make it a requirement.

They can’t grab your money with these cameras if you’re not speeding. What part of that does Councillor Curry not get?

Not a single one of her constituents will pay a cent in fines if they don’t speed. Is she suggesting that they aren’t law-abiding citizens and so will be caught by the cameras while breaking the law? Surely her time would be better spent encouraging people to obey the law rather than railling about the consequences when they don’t.

If only there was some device inside the car that could inform the driver of the speed at which they’re moving … perhaps a meter that indicates speed.

Now, we just need to give it a name.
