Commanda Bridge Closes Thursday For Repairs

This is a release from the City of Ottawa:

The City of Ottawa began construction on the Chief William Commanda Bridge multi-use pathway and rehabilitation project in the fall of 2021. The project consisted of the construction of a multi-use pathway (MUP) on the existing inactive and retained Chief William Commanda Bridge and the rehabilitation of the substructure of the bridge such as pier work and stone masonry repairs/repointing on abutments.

The new MUP connects the City of Ottawa’s Trillium Pathway to the south and the NCC Voyageurs’ Pathway in Gatineau to the north. The new Chief William Commanda Bridge multi-use pathway was prioritized to open for public use in August 2023, in advance of the completion of the full bridge structural rehabilitation. Since its opening, the new multi-use pathway has improved active transportation between Ottawa and Gatineau and serves as an interprovincial link for cycling commuters, recreational users, and visitors.

Remaining work on the Chief William Commanda Bridge will focus on the piers and rehabilitation of the substructure of the bridge. To learn more about this project and its progress, visit the project webpage.

Project update
North bridge pier concrete work continues
The remaining pier work continues on the north bridge structure of the Chief William Commanda multi-use pathway. This work is focused on the substructure of the bridge piers to rehabilitate the bridge and extend its service life. To complete this work safely, the contractor will require the north bridge to be closed six times this season to provide the crew with a safe access route to transport concrete to the vertical chutes.

After three successful pier pour dates, a fourth closure date has been announced for 7 am to 10 pm on Thursday, October 17. During the closure, users looking to cross the river will need to take an alternate route.

The closest alternate routes to cross the Ottawa River would be via the Chaudière Bridge to the east and the Champlain Bridge to the west.

The south bridge will remain open for use from the Trillium Pathway to Lemieux Island but will require users to turn around as they will not be able to cross to Gatineau.

Clear signage announcing the upcoming closures is posted on both the north and south approaches to the bridge and the ottawa.ca traffic map is updated to inform all users.

*Dates are weather dependent. Should they need to change, the project webpage and posted signs will be updated accordingly.

  1. The Voter says:

… and will we be able to use it year-round after this work is done or will it remain a three-season structure? If you want people to use it for ‘active transportation’, they really need to be able to cross it all the time.
