Ban ‘Abundance Of Caution’ Phrase: THE VOTER

Seeing how OC Transpo general manager Renee Amilcar is so careful to point out those situations at OC Transpo where things are being handled “with an abundance of caution”, does that mean that in all the other situations caution is being thrown to the wind?

Are there times that just barely enough caution is being used? Other times when nearly but not quite enough caution is employed? Who gets to define what is “an abundance”? Is your “abundance of caution” as abundant as mine and, if not, whose is the right level of abundance?

We need a rule at Ottawa City Council and standing committee meetings that the phrase “abundance of caution” is forbidden for both councillors and staff in all circumstances.

I wonder how many people around a recent standing committee meeting actually processed the proposed delivery date of the report on two reports about the 2021 light-rail derailment at a recent rail standing committee. It will come “next quarter”. Do they realize that could be March 31, 2025 which, as of that meeting on Oct. 10, is within the next quarter but is a date over five-and-a-half months away.

Why did nobody try to tie them down to something more specific than that?

Do I recognize the words “root cause,” “next quarter,” “abundance of caution,” from the Engage Ottawa thesaurus? No idea what they are synonyms for though.

    John:

    Definitions:

root cause = we don’t know
    next quarter = a suggestion
abundance of caution = a term foreign to OC Transpo

    Ken,

I would go a bit farther with “root cause”. I think it’s a synonym for “we haven’t yet found a way to blame this on someone else but we’re working very hard to do that”.

    Much better, Vote Person.

    Thank you
