How Trump’s Win Affects Ottawa
U.S. President Donald Trump is likely to change the world … probably not in a good way.
Some of those dicey moves will have an effect on Canada’s capital with much of the Trump fallout landing into the hands of an unprepared and slow-to-adapt city government.
Seal the border:
Will there be added restrictions to Canadian travelling across the U.S. border and slowdowns at crossing-points?
Deport illegal immigrants from the U.S.:
Where are the millions of illegal immigrants likely to go from the U.S.? Why Canada of course. And if you think we have a blow-back from legal refugees in Barrhaven, wait to waves of Canada-bound illegal U.S. immigrants rush the Canadian border. Immigration? We ain’t seen nothing yet. And the city’s social services departments will be strained to the breaking point.
Fight inflation:
That dragon might already have been slayed by the central banks across the world raising interest rates and now lowering them again. The biggest fight for Trump is not “make America affordable again” but how to keep the U.S. from entering a recession.
Stop outsourcing:
Is Canada likely to be perceived as someplace that is stealing U.S. jobs? Yes, given Trump’s low opinion of his northern neighbour. If you are selling to the U.S. as a branch plant or otherwise, look out.
The right to bear arms:
Trump is massively pro-gun ownership. Guns are showing up on Ottawa streets and the St. Lawrence River is a prime spot for smuggling. Business as usual.
Modernize the U.S. military:
That will likely create a call from the U.S. to Canada to spend more on the military. That could be good for the Ottawa-centered Department of National Defence.
Drop the electric-vehicle mandate:
There go those heavily government subsidized Canadian battery plants. That includes one near Kingston that was to create 600 jobs.
Deport pro-Hamas radicals:
Guess where?

Two comments. One. Don’t kid yourself, it won’t be illegal immigrants alone who will be looking to move into Canada, lots of legal American citizens who “want out” will be coming north too. It’s time for Justin Trudeau and Marc Miller to revisit their immigration targets once again. Two. How does moving away from electric vehicles and becoming close buddies with Elon Musk make sense? That relationship has been doomed from the start.
Great point sisco fararro, Donny Boy used the Elon Musk friendship to help get himself elected. Now let’s see where that friendship end up…
Kosmo. Maybe they both like being part of the bad dancers club.
I’m not happy about the result of the election. I believe;those who voted for that dumbo never listened to all his sick plans for USA because if they had they wouldn’t have voted to him. I am a proud Democrat American living in Ottawa for many years and if you believe he will try and run Canada also watch out. I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him.
Annette,
My sympathies – it can’t be easy watching what’s going on south of the border and, unfortunately, he’s guaranteed a four-year run unless he does something so egregious that they can’t ignore it. What could possibly fit that category is hard to imagine when you look at what they’ve managed to ignore up to now.
Thanks Voter – No I wasn’t happy with the election and the citizens of Ottawa who are so happy That Bozo won the election. I hope Governor Gavin Newsom gets what he is trying to do to make California a sanctuary city and it would be great for California. It would be good California because Bozo can’t interfere with him any longer. Also the people around there think the election was so good. I keep telling them that deporting everyone is a big mistake that it”s if the immigrants are deported there will be no one to continue their work of building bridges, highways, and buildings. Most of those immigrants are very hard working people. All immigrants are not bad people.
All they want is to get away from where they came from for all of the problems there. Trump also called the Latinos “garbage” and yet most Latinos actually voted for him STRANGE.
