Barrhaven Sprung Structure Fight Not Over: THE VOTER

Barrhaven residents might not have won as much as they didn’t lose.

The Barrhaven site is still on the list of Top 5 possible sites, just not one of the Top 2. The staff report sets out the criteria used to vet sites to get them from the original list of 92 possible locations down to the Top 5 and then the two that they will build first. Those two made it to the top partly because they are closer to ready-to-go status than the other three including Barrhaven. They were never going to build them all at one time and, while they are building the Woodroffe facility, they will be working on dealing with the impediments to the other top sites so that they can be brought on stream down the road.

So the people of Barrhaven have won a reprieve but there will most likely be, in the future, a Newcomer Centre coming to their community. When that will happen will depend on how much of the need can be met by the two announced structures on Woodroffe Avenue and on Hearst Way as well as what funding is available for locations three to five.

They say it’s not over until it’s over. Well, Barrhaven, it’s not over. You can put the champagne away though. You are definitely not in the clear but the inevitable has been delayed.
