Asylum seekers are people and people need to be treated like people.
Sprung structures are just a lot of syllables for tents. Tents are not suitable for extended winter stays.
There are a number of empty buildings in the city. Not derelict, just no longer in use. For example, there are a couple of buildings that were once elementary schools on Slack Road (between Merivale and Woodroffe) that should do quite nicely. Lots of space. Plenty of plumbing. Not in a residential area. Close to what passes for public transit.
The problems are two fold.
First, staff have focused on their preferred solution, to the exclusion of everything else. A recurring theme at city hall.
Second, city council delegated authority to staff to proceed with this hundred million plus dollar ‘solution’. Also a recurring theme at city hall.

Ron. The memo surrounding the decision you refer to is probably well-written and edited so that it looks like a lot of thought was put into what will eventually transpire. This typical of city hall. Once again, it would be interesting to find out how their problem-solving process is executed. Does a group of people gather in a room and once someone hits on an idea that might work go back to their desks to write more memos, or does the group work its way through alternatives? My guess is their modus operandi is the former. Ottawa city hall needs to teach its workers the latter.
Third, the focus is not on the asylum claimants first and foremost and what would be good for them but on what would be convenient for the City.
