Montreal? Make Ottawa Different: POTTER
uOttawa professor Evan Potter uses X to help forge an Ottawa identity with some words for the Nightlife Committee:
2/5 (B) A seeming fixation with all things Montreal. Yes, Old Montreal and its waterfront always charm ??tourists. But we’re different. Let’s play to our difference as capital with Made-in-#ottawa solutions. The creative talent is here staring us in the face. @Toon_Dreessen

3/5 (C) As a Montrealer, I watch #ottcity time and time again value process over measurable results. Our City’s default approach is good faith ‘process’ acts like hiring Night Mayor, reports on downtown, striking a Committee & Zoom consultations to inform but not really to engage

5/5 Back to M. Grondin’s mandate to re-energize 6:00pm-6:00am. He’ll come up with some ideas. But it’s mostly a solution in search of a problem. It doesn’t poll top-of-mind for Ottawans facing massive tax hikes. In fact, the @senators new arena in 2030 solves it. @KenGray #ottawa

I was employed – a good many years ago – to represent the interests of a city’s commercial and business centre – by those very interests. I worked closely – with some degree of difficulty – with city hall but it was the business community’s buy in and excitement that made it all work. City Hall did what it does best: control. Entrepreneurs did what they do best: promote! I think, in hindsight, that City Hall never really understood what we were trying to do – and how we were doing it.
