Ottawa City Hall Should Work For Us: MULVIHILL
Why are there municipal elections? Serious question.
Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and councillors were elected to serve the public. They were elected to mind the public purse and discharge monies to better the residents of our city. And what do they have to show for us putting our trust in them? In reality, very little.
Despite Sutcliffe’s promise of transparency, that’s not exactly his strong point nor that of much of council. The arrogance shown taxpayers is appalling. Take for example the recent multi-million dollar confidential settlements regarding Ottawa’s LRT. All conversations and agreements took place behind closed doors. Taxpayers’ money is being used to satisfy these settlements and yet we are afforded not a single explanation. The secrets, hidden agendas, lack of transparency and total disrespect for voters never ceases to amaze.
Justice William Hourigan’s final report on LRT should have given pause for careful thought. Unfortunately for this council, it was just business as usual.
The mayor and councillors work for us. They would be wise to remember that.

Municipal elections in Ottawa – and maybe everywhere? – are all about name recognition. So the most signs – as awful as they are – the better your chances. Also, apparently many people just check off the names on the ballot by alphabet. So if you have a bunch of signs and your name is Alan Allabee you are in. Credentials? Who knows.Maybe not even Alan. I don’t have data on the benefits of phone and robo calls or door knocking. You know – an actual contact with a candidate. If someone has some research on all this – kindly post the sources.

Somewhere along the way, all levels of government have gotten the idea that tax money is THEIR money……to do with as they see fit and to hell with the public, their wants and needs.
WE PAY THE BILLS YET GET NO ACCOUNTABILITY FROM ANYONE AS TO WHERE THE MONEY GOES.
THEY RAISE TAXES BUT WE DON’T KNOW WHERE THE MONEY WE’VE ALREADY PAID, HAS GONE……..POOF.
