So What’s The Ruse On Senior Transit Pass?
No one in their right mind would recommended more than doubling the cost of a senior transit pass without an ulterior motive.
Why seniors vote more than most. People don’t like to see seniors poorly treated.
So what issue in the budget is this transit hike distracting Ottawans from?
What’s the ruse? What’s the dodge? What’s the deflection?
What is there is the budget that scares the pols and staff so much that they propose gouging seniors? What kind of riverboat gambling is going on here?
Anybody know or is there not a reason other than trying to fill the budget hole?

When in doubt, look at the $ signs.
Per reports in the Citizen, the committee of four are considering a 60% drop in the proposed senior rate hike (doesn’t that sound generous) would bring the monthly senior’s pass to $54, or about 10% higher than the current pass. This would ‘cost’ between $1.0 million and $1.2 million.
That has to be added on to the $36 million ‘place holder’ in the transit budget. Place holder as in ‘we don’t know where this is going to come from’. If you are looking for the elephant in the room, look for that large thing in the corner, with the lampshade on its head.
Staff drop a $36 million plug into the transit budget and nary a councillor can be bothered to ask “What’s that?”
Smoke and mirrors since staff have never been known to table a reasonable yearly income/expense projection (read budget). Watson could “find millions in a Christmas miracle” and potholes and sidewalk plowing goes missing each year. According to Global yesterday the real property tax increases have been 8% not 2 to 3 % so where has the extra revenue gone? Look to the three “Ls” LRT Landsdowne Library Ottawa has gone to L, financially!
