Why Does The City Need An Election Survey?
This electoral experience survey is being held because of the overwhelming outcry in the community to improve the electoral experience.
No word if this is a make-work project in response to the terrible employment figures released on Friday or if the city has too much money and must find a way to spend it. Maybe the survey, if printed, could help support the Lisgar Street bollards.
Why is this survey even being taken? In response to what problem? Or is it because some bright bulb thinks it’s a good idea? Perhaps the ballots are not crisp enough.

The City of Ottawa’s Elections Office is conducting a public consultation on the electoral experience in Ottawa’s municipal elections. Your input will help shape processes and procedures for future elections in our city.
We would like your feedback on a number of election-related topics including your experience participating in the 2022 Municipal Elections (if applicable), election-related communications, accessibility, and voting methods for future elections.

Given the city’s fiscal plight, the idea of spending labour and time on this survey sends shivers down my spine.

Elections are a vital part of our democracy but that can’t have anything to do with it.
Maybe they’ve heard the orange man rambling on about not having any more elections in the nation to the south and want to see if they could get away with that here.
Maybe they’re looking for ways to make it even easier for incumbents to be re-elected no matter how incompetent they are.
Maybe they’re wondering if the ‘silent majority’ of Ottawa residents, those who don’t participate in municipal elections, even know that there are such things.
Maybe there’s money left over in the election budget and they didn’t know what else to do with it.
Maybe they’re looking for data to provide to Council to use in their so-called ‘fairness’ campaign against the province and the feds.
Maybe they have a couple of interns in the Elections Office who, midway between elections, had nothing to do so they told them to find something to occupy their time.
Maybe the elections staff have seen other City departments running surveys and other ‘consultations’ all the time and they have survey-envy.
Maybe they want to change the colour of the ballots but don’t want to upset anyone and they’ve placed that question in among many others where people won’t notice it and figure out what they really want to know.
Maybe a staff member is taking a course on running surveys and has to do a field test to pass.
Maybe they just want to see who’s watching.
Whatever the reason, you can almost be sure it has little or nothing to do with preserving the last vestiges of democracy at the City.
