Don’t know about some of you but I am a heart and respiratory patient who as per the Ottawa Heart Institute requires a controlled environment. Picking up my significant other downtown may require a few extra minutes parked (sometimes 15 minutes or so) during the summer in plus 30 degree weather, which in a non air conditioned car with the windows rolled down is not conducive to one’s (my) health. What would be your suggestion as the current commute for her with public transportation is a non sequitor due to her degenerative arthritis in both knees and she is legally blind. We were turned down for Para Transpo which we were reluctant to use anyway as we felt there were others more in need than ourselves. Unless you have been in our position and you have interviewed people like ourselves and have walked a mile in our shoes… ?
Fact: For 6 wonderful years now it has been impossible for me to get my car to pollute. It cannot idle even if I wanted to. (it is not a Tesla, but it is the same type)
Other cities:
Vancouver – Idling means running the engine of a motor vehicle when the vehicle is not in motion.
Under section 2.7 of the Motor Vehicle Noise and Emission Abatement By-law 9344 it is illegal to idle a vehicle:
For more than 3 consecutive minutes in a 60-minute period, or
While unattended and unlocked
Victoria – No person shall cause or permit a vehicle engine to idle for more than three consecutive minutes.
Edmonton- Bylaw 14600 prohibits vehicles from idling for more than five minutes total in any thirty-minute period in any area identified as a no-idling zone.
Regina- No person shall allow a diesel motor to remain running longer than 15 minutes in any location within 500 feet of a residential zone.
Toronto- The Idling Control Bylaw limits idling to no more than one minute in a 60-minute period. Vehicle emissions are a contributing factor in climate change. By reducing unnecessary idling to just one minute, we are helping to improve the quality of the air in Toronto.
I found too many cities, so I will stop the list here.
My family members who have asthma do suffer with poor air quality. People on the “phone” probably do not know they are idling while making videos such as we see here. The bylaw actually hurts no one, Temperature range in the bylaw makes sure we are warm and cool (where idling is permitted)……Just saying!
Hello Anderson. One solution to your problem would be to buy an automobile that has air conditioning. It wouldn’t address the idling issue but would be effective in dealing with the problem you noted in the second sentence of your response.
