I’ve been wondering about this garbage thing for a while and Mike Patton is 100% correct. Even when we were a large family like many years ago no matter what we did we still have lots of garbage. Now it’s only me and I’m living in a high rise and we haven’t been told anything about garbage. There is no way for anyone to tell us what to do with our garbage, we automatically throw all our garbage down the chute and our apartments are too small to keep garbage in our units. So go figure it out not only our garbage but how about all the other apartment buildings they can’t keep garbage indoors also, so what does that leave the city with their wonderful rules? Do they realize in today’s world here in Ottawa there are as many apartment buildings as there are private homes and the way this city is building there is going to be many more apartments being built. What does the city plan to do with us living in apartments? I’m curious to that.
Mr. Patton is correct. This 3 bag limit is a crock. If you want less garbage, don’t penalize the consumer but do penalize the producer. If cities want to reduce garbage, get after the producers to design better packaging. It was done with glass pop bottles and were replaced with plastic bottles. ( I know, poor example .) But it proves that consumers can be a force.
Mike is right. It seems like another attempt to make money by the city, and the opportunity to add more staff. Many bylaw and 2 garbage “educators” going door to door to talk to people about how great the program is.
Fun fact – people are practicing moving extra garbage to other neighbour’s properties in advance of the change to the 3 bag limit. People in my hood have already caught people putting garbage at the end of their properties and many more are getting cameras to catch the neighbours doing this! On top of this, there are already bags of garbage showing up on the side of the road on Carling (near the 19th tee) and the March Highlands park entrances. The amount of dumping is going to be epic!
Once again the city isn’t thinking the container message through and looking at their graphics logically. The graphics in the city documents show two approved containers a sturdy 140 L container weighing no more than 33 pounds at the curb and a 140 L garbage bag weighing no more than 33 pounds full at the curb. Assuming a sturdy
container would weigh close to 20 pounds or more, then to be compliant it can’t hold more
than 13 pounds of garbage. While the bag weighing in at next to nothing can hold 33 pounds.How does a bin help a ve large family if they are limited to about 13 pounds of garbage and why should they go to the expense of purchasing a bin .

Part of the question may be keeping the varmints (raccoons, skunks, etc.) from breaking open a thin bag and feasting all night long. Some neighbourhoods don’t have that concern so may be able to put out plastic bags but others have no choice but to use the sturdy containers.
It may also matter if you’re putting the garbage out the evening before or in the morning.
