Ottawa Is Not Montreal: WHOPPER WATCH

“No need to go to Montreal for a great night out.”

Mathieu Grondin, Ottawa’s nightlife commissioner

How much are we paying for this again?

Your agent knows of no one who goes to Montreal for a great night out. Why would you drive four hours there-and-back to go to restaurants and bars in Montreal. We have perfectly good restaurants and bars in Ottawa. This is not a revelation.

There’s a reason why people don’t drive to Montreal for a night out. Ottawa has all that Montreal has and more. You know, museums, the Rideau Canal, Winterlude, music festivals all summer, a couple of pro sports teams and a wealth of other attractions.

Sure Ottawans will spend a weekend in Montreal. But this just in … Montrealers spend weekends in Ottawa. They skate and bike along the canal. They go to museums. They once went to the ByWard Market.

Grondin keeps comparing Ottawa to Montreal. Ottawa is not Montreal, nor does it want to be.

Ottawans live in the nation’s capital because they like Ottawa. They like the parks, the scenic drives, the waterfalls, the rivers and yes the nightlife in small doses.

Ottawa is Ottawa because that’s the way people like it. Don’t paste Montreal on Ottawa. This city has its own identity and if you are a moron you will call it “the city that fun forgot.” Breaking news … you can have fun in Ottawa.

Ottawa needs to be Montreal like it needs a 13th shot after 12 in the Market. If you want Montreal, go to Montreal.

If you want Ottawa, you live in Ottawa.

It’s not Montreal, will never be Montreal, nor should it be Montreal.

It will not base its identity on bars open til four in the morning, on who has the best smoked meat (why have smoked meat when you can have a Beavertail?), on the quality of steamies in a pool room or adopt a hockey team like it’s a religion.

Ottawa should be Ottawa and that’s just fine, thank you.

Ottawa is different and that’s OK.

Really?? No kidding. Ottawa is not Montreal and never will be. Ottawa is a sad case and there is no comparing the two cities. Never in a million years. If you want a good smoked meat sandwich it’s Montreal, in Ottawa they don’t even know how to cut the meat properly, and the bread here is awful, the real rye bread is the real thing in Montreal the best of all. As far as the rest goes I know Montreal has the best night life, and the restaurants are open after the clubs close to get a bite to eat. Ottawa does not have more than Montreal and never will. I’m from Montreal and came here in 1963, you cannot compare the two cities, even now. Montreal was never dead and will never will be. I still go to Montreal and there are lots to see besides beaver tails and skating on the canal and long walks. One other thing that has nothing to do with this, the rent is liveable and affordable comparing to the rents here and I can prove it. Montreal is more fun than Ottawa will ever be. And I’d rather drive or take the train/bus to Montreal than go to the Market on a Saturday night and have a good time. Montreal has the Orange Julep and it’s open very late and I’ve been going there even living here. It’s the best also.

This guy is another waste of money
Hire someone who will LIVE in Ottawa, WORK for Ottawa, LOVE Ottawa, APPRECIATE all Ottawa has to offer, ……..NOT TURN OTTAWA INTO MONTREAL.

SO SICK OF THESE people……WHO PRETEND BUT DO NOTHING.

An old British Blues Band called Savoy Brown once recorded a song called “I’m Tired”. One line in the chorus stated “Oh wouldn’t it be a real drag if we were all the same”.

Looks like the three previous commenters don’t agree with you. Waiting on the “if you don’t like it leave” comment. I love Ottawa but it is not the be all to end all and neither is Montreal. You have too many sycophants Mr Grey but it is good to see that you are getting a bit of pushback. I will be interested in your response though I could probably quote it verbatim right now as I have noticed you don’t take criticism well. I suspect there will be a response column before you go to bed. Cheers!

    cheers
