The Gospel According To Denley: MULVIHILL

The Bible according to Ottawa Citizen columnist Randall Denley …

Debt servicing for the new (Lansdowne) stadium and parking would be $6.9 million a year. That’s hardly a substantial burden for the city, which has a $4.5-billion operating budget.

Well Randall, that $6.9 million each year would go a long way providing for the have-nots in our city seeking shelter from the rain. It might also be appreciated by those who are unfortunate enough to have dipped a tire or two into the numerous potholes that fill our streets. Or perhaps some could be used to fix crumbling sidewalks or possibly repair accessible infrastructure that has seen better days.

The City of Ottawa seems to have difficulty formatting a budget that speaks to  the actual operating and capital needs of the city but Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and the majority of council don’t seem to hesitate when it comes to outside interests.

There is no doubt a laundry list of things for which $6.9 million could be used.

  1. John Langstone says:

If I read the audit report correctly the debt requirement for Lansdowne 2.1 is between $312.7 million and $356.8 million. If the return from the waterfall is roughly what it has been so far, isn’t Randall’s $6.9 million/yr understating the debt servicing cost by as much as a factor of 2 or more?

Talk is cheap Ms. Mulvihill… that 6.9 million dollar savings would not be put into the homeless as they’re mostly white males (oh dear is that white male privilege popping up again), it will go to the bike lane beautification society or some such wrought.
