Police Body Cams Are For Good Guys: THE VOTER

The Ottawa Police Service has pushed back using officer body cameras until 2026.

Perhaps the police should bear in mind that 2026 is also a municipal election year. Do they want to give fodder to the defund-the-police and similar campaigns? Is that really the year that they want the first negative body-cam video being released?

There’s an argument from the police and their supporters that if you’re doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear from speed cameras and other measures. Will the same people accept the idea that, as a police officer, you have nothing to fear from a body-cam unless you’re doing something wrong?

In fact, there have been cases where a body-cam has supported an officer’s contention that they were doing nothing wrong. They should be welcoming them.
