Build Homes For The Disadvantaged: THE VOTER

Build affordable housing with the millions that have been allocated to the Lansdowne expansion.

Part of the issue at The Mission is that there’s nowhere for people to go from there and the new people continue to arrive. If you have no exit route, your space is going to be clogged up very quickly.

The type of modest bachelor and one-bedroom apartments, the ones that people used to access once they got back on their feet with The Mission’s help, are increasingly not available because they’re either being torn down to make way for expensive condos and monster houses or the rents have skyrocketed out of people’s reach.

A single guy with a minimum wage job can’t ever afford a $1,500 apartment. Many people who are newly sober can’t go back to the rooming house or slum apartment environment if they hope to stay away from drugs and alcohol. Their very survival depends on stable, affordable housing which is hard to find in our community.

We desperately need to help The Mission to carry out its work on a daily basis but equally important is the provision of decent, affordable housing that will let men leave The Mission when they’re ready. There are far too many people in all the shelters, both male and female, who already have jobs but still can’t afford a place of their own. Unless we provide that exit, they will still be turning people away to sleep on the streets every night.
