Traffic Cameras Have Enforcement Flaw: MULVIHILL

Can anyone say “cash grab”?

The City of Ottawa has posted speed limit signs around school zones and rightly so.

Schools are in session Monday to Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. approximately. Speed limits should and must be strictly adhered to. There is no school on weekends so the automated speed enforcement cameras don’t operate. During school hours the posted speed limit is 40 kmh and outside of those hours the speed limit is 50 kmh.

However, schools are not in session on statutory holidays yet the cameras operate as they would during a normal school day. Fines are issued to unsuspecting drivers and are sent in the mail. The fine amounts to $94 including all fees and surcharges.

If the cameras aren’t operational on weekends, why should they be operational on statutory holidays and how much does the city rake in per year with these fines?

Cash grab?

  1. Been There says:

A statuary holiday, take family day for instance, for some is not necessarily a holiday for others.
I do agree that , in certain locations, they are a cash grab. As camera locations in community safety zones become well known ,the city will eventually face a decline in a revenue stream they are dependent on.
A much a better solution to speeding, would have been mobile cameras. These cameras are easy to relocate to any location in the city facing a speeding problem at any time of any day.
