Where’s The Money NCC On Water Taxis? THE VOTER

The National Capital Commission has yet to explain what it would cost to make the now-free crossing by water taxi or how people would get to and from the boat dock on either side of the river.

I don’t know what the possibilities are on the Gatineau side but maybe they are expecting to persuade OC Transpo to run a shuttle between the Ottawa dock at the bottom of the Rideau Canal locks to the Rideau Station to connect with buses and the O-Train. Of course, since there’s a fairly steep incline from the dock up to the NAC, we know that, during storms, that shuttle wouldn’t run due to OC’s severe storm protocol. Good luck to anyone trying to walk up or down that hill in winter under their own steam.

The operator of the current water taxi is a for-profit business and has already said he would need to purchase a larger, sturdier boat (or boats) that could cut through the ice on the river in the winter. Is the NCC going to pay the cost of the added service or will that fall on the people who now walk and cycle for free over the bridge?

This water taxi business is a stupid idea, once you get across the murky waters onto the Hull side you still need a ride to get anywhere. It’s kinda like taking the LRT to Tunney’s Pasture and it breaks down… then what???
