New Bus Routes Must Pass A Car Dealer: THE VOTER
“New Ways to Bus Team”? Is it just me or does that have an Orwellian ring to it?
The team is the group that rejigged Ottawa’s bus routes. The members take away people’s ability to access a bus easily and conveniently. Then they label it a new way to bus when, in fact, it’s a way to walk further to get a bus which might or might not come as advertised and might or might not have room for you if it does come.
Sounds more like a new way to find a bus that will take you to a car dealer so you can get yourself a reliable way to travel.
The Voter is a respected community activist and long-time Bulldog commenter who prefers to keep her identity private.
ed. note: CTV News reports that 74,000 hours a year of bus service will be cut as a result of OC Transpo’s New Way To Bus.

Voter, I realize there have been problems with the old bus schedules, and now new (different?) problems with the new schedules. My own experiences taking the bus have been quite positive, but I’m not a regular commuter. I feel that a lot of Bulldog articles and comments are invariably negative and disparaging, especially when it comes to any initiatives started by the City to make our municipality more environmentally sustainable. Yes, I agree that Council and certain City departments fully deserve the criticisms aimed at them, but I’m left with the feeling that a lot of commenters are anti-environmentalist, and will find any excuse to tear down anything the City does that tries to redirect our gas-guzzling economy. Besides, there’s so much nastiness and outright cruelty going around at the federal and provincial levels, south of the border, and in the world in general — do you really need to add to that? I’m looking forward to some encouraging municipal news for a change — I really think that can’t be so very difficult! According to the American Kennel Club: Bulldogs are sweet, devoted, and easygoing, and they want to please their owner. So….?
Theresa:
It’s not really my job to make the news nice.
I call them the way I see them and the news from city hall has been abysmal.
When the news gets better, well things are likely to change here at The Bulldog.
But I’m not about to call stink Chanel No. 5.
cheers

Theresa:
The Bulldog and Bulldog Readers are the ones sticking up for the regular transit users. The regular transit users in Ottawa for the most part don’t have another option, they are hard working individuals with less free time on their hands due to poor transit service.
Theresa, for an initiative to be environmentally sustainable it must be more than a hollow virtue signal. To qualify as environmentally sustainable the solution must be viewed from beginning to end. Not just from the point that provides the best illusion of success.
The decision to move to e-buses may prove, in the long term, to be environmentally sustainable. Or, it may not. At the moment this is a billion dollar plus gamble.
The troublesome part of the process (at least to me) is that the decision was made in haste. It was made before the physical due diligence on whether the pre-selected buses was complete. It was made before staff knew (as contrasted with assumed) that Hydro Ottawa could implement the changes to its grid to support the bus charging requirements. It was made before all the costs to do so were even reasonably estimateable.
City Hall’s pattern of making major decisions prematurely is patently obvious to an objective observer. It has been going on for well over a decade now.
Is it not time to get the provincial ministry of municipal affairs involved to investigate the outrageous fiascos created by both elected officials and municipal employees from top to bottom who have perpetrated such egregious follies on the citizens of our fair city?
