Democracy Takes A Beating At Finance Committee (2)

So below we have the votes on the community improvement program grant of about $1 million to Trim Works Developments Limited.

The grant was released to the public on Friday before Canada Day weekend and voted on the Tuesday immediately after.

There was little time for scrutiny of the deal, no public policy debate and no time for community associations or taxpayers to get involved in a healthy debate. That’s anti-democratic. The measure went through finance committee.

Putin Is Alive And Well And Living At City Hall

So we take it from the vote below that the ‘fors’ believe in the anti-democratic process and the ‘no’ voters don’t.

For (10) M. Luloff, L. Dudas, G. Gower, T. Tierney, R. King, J. Leiper, R. Brockington, C. Kitts, G. Darouze, and C. Curry

Against (2) S. Menard, and M. Sutcliffe

Worth noting is that Mayor Mark Sutcliffe could not muster enough votes to support his position. Furthermore, Capital Councillor Shawn Menard couldn’t get his brother-in-arms and Kitchissippi Councillor Jeff Leiper on board.

Democracy and good governance took a beating at finance committee on Tuesday. Maybe city council can right this wrong.

Doubtful but we can only hope.

I’m surprised you haven’t learned by now Ken, Leiper is one of the new bobbleheads. He’s been inching that way for some time now and this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. His causes, other than those on two wheels, always revolve around the ‘flavour du jour’ (read: tag a bag for example) or something backroom-ish (as above).

The problem is, Kitch loves him and he’s golden until he decides to step down.

Well this shows how deep the corporations’ pockets are in town, and who not to vote for in the next municipal elections. I am not surprised but thoroughly disgusted by my councillor in the east end Laura Dudas. We supported her i her first run, but will work hard to defeat her in the next election.
