NCC Misses Start Time Of Canal Skateway Opening

To much fanfare, the National Capital Commission said the Rideau Canal Skateway would be open at 9 a.m Sunday.

In fact, the NCC has delayed the opening to 12:30 p.m. because it did not leave enough time for flooding the surface to freeze.

This is a release from the NCC:

The opening of the Rideau Canal Skateway is now scheduled for 12:30 pm on January 21, 2024, to allow the surface to fully freeze after overnight flooding. A section between Fifth Avenue and Bank Street will be open to skaters.

Amazing that after how many years of operating the Canal skateway, the NCC doesn’t know how long it takes a freshly flooded surface to freeze! How much better of an indicator could they provide us to demonstrate the level of their incompetence?
