Night-Life Plan Stumbles From The Start
“The Nightlife Economy Action Plan will support the growth of Ottawa’s nightlife sector and the broader economy, and establish the city as a nightlife destination.”
City of Ottawa staff
No it won’t.
Few things send more shivers up your spine than Kanata South Councillor Allan Hubley and Kitchissippi Councillor Jeff Leiper designing a night-life policy.
Hubley has no idea and Leiper thinks he has an idea but if he spent 10 minutes with experts in the field, he’d find he has 10-minutes worth of knowledge on the topic.
City Hall To Legislate Fun: TOP 13 LIST
This is the kind of accrued experience that gave us the light-rail fiasco and started the story from CTV Ottawa on this wrong-headed escapade with the oft-repeated phrase the “town that fun forgot.”
Nice job. So far the plan, without even starting, set the city’s reputation back to the days when that cliche applied.

To increase night fun in Ottawa, Leiper is going to propose that the City install front and back lights on all bikes and issue reflective strips to all riders. Hubley will be proposing that the Kanata Costco implement shopping hours until 10pm and that Hazealdean Mall re-open Zellers and only allow 8 pm to 3 am shopping there. In order to bridge the urban-suburban divide, the City will pick up the HST for all purchases after 10 pm by those who are shopping by bicycle.
Thank you Andrew:
I know Leiper and Hubley will seriously consider your suggestions.
My understanding was that strobe light were being put of bikes.
Maybe I’m wrong.

If Ottawa city hall really wants make the city a night life destination.it had better hire more police, more para medics and more guns and gangs authorities. In closing, let’s hope the the nightlife plan is scrapped.
“will … establish the city as a nightlife destination.”
A destination is the end point of someone’s journey. Pray tell, from whence will these travellers be coming? Hull? Smiths Falls? Plantagenet? Take a look at the city on a map – it is not close enough to any major population centre(s) that would send sufficient night-lifing bodies to Ottawa to underwrite the work that would be needed to transform “late night” in this city.
Has Councillor Hubley asked anyone in his ward (or anywhere else) about their need for nightlife? Are the proponents of this scheme aware that our economy is being attacked on all sides by inflation? When you are tightening your belt, entertainment is often the first optional expense to be cut from a household budget. When you are having difficulty putting food on the table, most people aren’t looking for ways to spend money on “nightlife”.
Reality check time.
Ken, I wish you had an up-tick feature where we could “approve” comments without having to write a reply.
Andrew, Love it!
