Ottawa City Hall Just Doesn’t Get It: THE VOTER

Ottawa City Hall might read Ron Benn’s columns but my question is do they comprehend them or understand how the words apply to them.

My suspicions are that they can see the words on the screen but aren’t able to comprehend any connection to their actions. When you are as convinced of your inherent abilities and rightness as many of them seem to be, it’s difficult if not impossible to accept there might be a different and better way to go about something.

The first step to correcting a problem is admitting it exists which the city rarely does. Cast your mind back to the testimony at the provincial LRT commission at which politicians and bureaucrats told us one after another that they went against the law and against city or provincial policies with no regard for the outcome as long as it suited their own goals.

I would suggest that most of them still think everything they did was just fine and any problems that arose are all to be laid at someone else’s doorstep. And that’s just one example.

This is endemic throughout the city and doesn’t allow them to ‘hear’ any other ideas since to do so would mean they were somehow misguided or even full out wrong. Some part of that is due to the belief that the way they’ve always done things is the one true way which is perpetuated by hiring the followers of certain bureaucrats to replace them when they leave.

That ensures that their work is never challenged or even reviewed and they go further down the rabbit hole in perpetuity.

Yep, one of the worst things you can say in life or business is “we have always done it this way.”

  2. sisco farraro says:

Yes, Mr. Anderson, “dogma” is a word we seldom see used in articles appearing on The Bulldog. Although if we did, titles for articles would probably be all be entitled something like “The Dogma of City Hall”, “More Dogma at City Hall”, “Dogma at City Hall Part III”, “Valley of The Dogma” and on and on.

We should use “dogma” more often. It has a bit of poochy feel about it.
