People Really Do Care About The Ottawa Citizen
There was one thing I got badly wrong in Saturday’s post about my former employer the Ottawa Citizen closing its newsroom.
People do care about the newspaper, even if they aren’t subscribing to it much anymore.
Yesterday’s post in a few hours rolled up five times more page views than the best-read post for the whole month of May. That number continues to grow very quickly.
Ottawa Citizen Closes Its Newsroom
It might be because the closing didn’t get much conventional media play. It received a few tweets and a mention on Reddit previously but that’s about it. However Google gave The Bulldog post heavy rotation and the rest is history.
Page views didn’t just come from the Ottawa and eastern Ontario areas but from across Canada and even a smattering from around the world.
Frankly, your agent thought the post was a bit of a throwaway but obviously I was wrong.

Nothing like a quiet morning, a coffee and my newspaper to read. An old habit, I suppose. But when you read the closing of a local production facility, the veteran Citizen newspaper, it’s another sign of change in the news-gathering industry. Sadly the regular edition was outdone by the number of inserts in midweek. So what’s the future? Reading the paper on line? Not a big fan.
Closing the Citizen’s newsroom is like losing a professional sports franchise that skips town because of low attendance. No one really cares about the team until it’s gone and then for only a short period of time. Life goes on.
Perhaps you’re right Sisco.
Still it’s a shame though inevitable. The next step will come as a shock.
