A Quick Guide To Locating The Ottawa Senators – Part 2
The main reasons why moving the Ottawa Senators to LeBreton Flats is problematic:
- LeBreton will be served by an unreliable light-rail line;
- LeBreton is not downtown. It’s close to downtown, but it is not downtown;
- LeBreton has a big hill between it and the core;
- LeBreton is not pedestrian friendly;
- Arenas are empty most of the time so a Sens rink won’t animate LeBreton Flats;
- An entertainment district won’t work around a LeBreton arena for many of the same reasons a home for the Senators won’t work there;
- Do you really, as an arena owner, want to have to do business with the National Capital Commission?
- Light rail lacks the capacity to take the thousands of fans to and from an arena efficiently;
- LeBreton has good transportation links for fans driving to the arena, but they have no place to park;
- Population growth in Ottawa is moving west to places such as Barrhaven, Stittsville and Kanata, not toward LeBreton;
- No parking at LeBreton, no parking revenue for the Senators;
- It’s cheaper to renovate an existing arena than build a new one;
- Broadcasting and streaming are raising much revenue for teams … over time fans in the seats will become incidental so location won’t matter;
- The Canadian Tire Centre is functional. A new arena might not work.
