City Amends OP To Accommodate Lansdowne 2.0

One more brick in the wall for Lansdowne 2.0 to go forward.

Increasingly it looks as if the city is going forward with this flawed scheme without much in the way of public input. The consultations are badly biased and a dog-and-pony show. They are about small changes to the plan but do not address the big question which is does Ottawa want to spend $330 million on a project that has failed in so many ways and is about to reach about a half-billion dollars in spending by taxpayers? That’s a lot of money for minor-league football, minor-league soccer and minor-league hockey.

Someone is making money on this scheme but it’s not the City of Ottawa. The business about air rights sounds about as financially sound as the waterfall that has produced nothing for the city and was designed to produce nothing for the city.

There’s no groundswell of support from the public and there are just costs in it for the city. It’s a bill without much upside. As for the document below, it’s going forward with Lansdowne 2.0 before it has even been approved by council. What’s the rush?

Who wants this? Developers most certainly and the city gets no part of the action from the residential, commercial and office structures. The municipality receives property taxes and related fees but it gets that from every project.

So there’s nothing in this project for the municipal government, nothing in it for residents and taxpayers (well a big bill) and nothing in it that is likely to improve the moribund site. Residents lose some parkland. What’s the upside?

Gougeon Must Probe The LRT Trillium Line Procurement

Who wants this project? Politicians want it and you’re left to guess why. City staff wants it and you’re left to wonder why. But developers want it and it’s easy to understand why.

The public really needs to get mobilized to stop this thing if it’s not too late. It worked at the last minute with tag-a-bag, why not Lansdowne? Ottawa has more than enough debt, thank you, and smart people should be tired of paying interest on debt rather than using it for capital projects and services for everyone, not just special interest groups. Civic politicians need to free themselves from the demands of the development industry. Citizens should not want to be paying for this pecuniary sinkhole.

What’s in it for the people of Ottawa? More private concrete on residents’ property. That must end.

People should be tired of public money being spent for the benefit of politicians, bureaucrats and developers. Let’s use tax money for everyone.

If developers want to build at Lansdowne and also want two bright new stadiums for their minor-league sports, that’s what banks are for. Everyone else uses banks when they need money. It’s not like these wealthy builders can’t get loans at banks. They have lots of assets to put up to back the loan.

Staff Left Council In Lurch On Garbage: BENN

City politicians, bureaucrats and developers are borrowing at The Royal Bank of Taxpayers. And much of that ‘borrowing’ is free money for rich guys. If the city is handing out free money, I’d like some, too. I’m quite willing to drive to city hall with a recycled bag to pick it up. Just name the date.

When a hotel proposed for the airport came begging for free money, the city refused but the hotel is being built anyway. Can’t blame the hotel for wanting free money. I could bring a big cardboard carton to get mine. And I wouldn’t be asking for $13 million or $500 million either. Something much more modest. Something I could pick up in a way that’s not as gaudy as a new stadium. No one will know. Honest.

Anyway here’s one more example below of why the fix is in at Lansdowne. Don’t let it happen.

We are in Canada and the Ottawa RedBlacks are our Team. They are members of a Professional League the CFL (Canadian Football League). It is a Canadian Major League and not a Minor League. Can you think Canadian, not the USA all the time? Don’t appreciate your insinuation and insult to the Canadian Fans who know, enjoy and support Canadian football!
Hey ….. in case you did not know they won the Grey Cup symbolic of the best Professional Team in Canadian Foot.
Can you even name the minor-League football team that Ottawans are all proud of?

  2. Ken Gray says:

    Bob:

I know you love your RedBlacks and you’re a great person.

That said, your beloved team is big step below the NFL.

    Enjoy the games.

    cheers

  3. Kosmo says:

tonight’s game is looking more and more like “empty seat night at Landsdowne” RedBlacks are a step below the CFL these days.

  4. Andrew says:

Thank you for the update on this fiasco. What is understood, the stadium is staying, so the red blacks are not Kicked out if 2.0 is not approved. The rink and towers above the rink are the issue. I have yet to see any example in Canada where urban downtown “Park” green space is removed to make money for a private company. That is the issue, tax dollars spent to remove almost 2 acres of public greenspace so a private company can make up for lost money. Please note: the city is growing 40% in the next 17 years and the rink is planned to shrink 40%. How is any of this “in the public interest” that a council is responsible and given power for?

  5. Ron Benn says:

Andrew, your last sentence is the most pertinent. It has become more and more apparent that council is not aware of what it is responsible for, let alone how to exercise the powers granted them by the province.
