Our Long-Standing Oversight LRT Councillors

We have three councillors left from the vote of December 19, 2012 that unanimously supported building the Confederation Line and were responsible for oversight of the project:

Steve Desroches – Gloucester-South Nepean Ward (left council and returned this term; he is currently the chairman of the light-rail subcommittee)

Allan Hubley – Kanata South Ward

Tim Tierney – Beacon Hill-Cyrville Ward

The Confederation Line was launched September 14, 2019.

The elected officials still sitting on council today from the period of 2014 to 2018 are below. That council had the bulk of oversight of this project. They are:

Riley Brockington – River Ward

George Darouze – Osgoode Ward

Jeff Leiper – Kitchissippi Ward

City council and the mayor are ultimately responsible for what happens at Ottawa City Hall. Councillors and the mayor are the board of directors of the municipal government.

Light rail is largest Ottawa project in this city’s municipal history. Oversight was critical.

    Thanks, Ken. Very helpful reminder.

What strikes me the most about that list, is all those councilors have reached the pinnacle of their careers. They have found the cushiest and easiest job they will ever have. And will probably continue run for council as long as possible and we let it happen.

Steve Desroches made the worst career decision possible by keeping his 2 term promise but found away to get a job back at city hall. (2 term promise is only counts the first time around)

Tim Tierney had a 2 term promise but living the high life made him reconsider.

Riley Brockington will be a lifer providing we let him.

George Darouze is looking a little/alot lost without mentor Jimbo by his side and the in person council meetings are better for his image.

Jeff Leiper well Jeffy is just Jeffy.

Allan Hubley didn’t even know he was running in the last election until he won.

    Kosmo,

They could still move ‘up’ to provincial or federal elected office. That’s not unusual. Plus if they go federal, they don’t have to relocate and, after six years, they get a cushy federal pension in addition to their OMERS pension. Bring on the gravy train!

Hubley already will have a taste of this with his CAF pension added to his city hall haul.
