Please Take Down Your Ad Blocker For This Website

The Bulldog has a number of devoted people who contribute their time and effort to this website so that Ottawa continues to get comprehensive municipal, national and international news and opinion coverage.

We have been reluctant to erect a paywall on The Bulldog because, while it would raise revenue, it would reduce the publication’s reach. So we rely on our ads to cover our costs.

Which brings us to ad blockers. You get The Bulldog free and in return we put ads on our pages. If you use an ad blocker, this website gets no revenue. Estimates on ad blocker use vary in Canada from 27 per cent to 48 per cent of readers.

The technology is readily available to block people who use ad blockers from seeing this website. The technology is also in place to easily erect a paywall. But we’d prefer to keep The Bulldog free and we don’t want to alienate readers by being forced to take down their ad blockers to see this publication.

Most ad blockers have an option to whitelist (allow ads) on websites you choose not to ad block. We’d ask you to make The Bulldog one of those exceptions (https://bulldogottawa.com/).

You get The Bulldog free because of those ads. We think that’s a pretty good deal. But if you block those ads, you cost The Bulldog revenue. So please whitelist (allow ads) to appear on this website.

Recently, the Ottawa radio station CityNews stopped broadcasting because it could not raise enough revenue. Layoffs have diminished the quality and quantity of local news coverage. The Ottawa Citizen’s newsroom is now a roller-skating rink with its tiny staff working from home. Post-secondary schools are closing journalism programs because of diminishing student demand and, what few students they have, graduate into unemployment. We don’t publish this website to get rich.

The Bulldog began 14 years ago to help fill a void in local journalism. And we’ve done that. This website over that period of time and in the face of a difficult economy inside and outside journalism has gone from zero readers to a record 133,000 page views a week in November. For that, we say a big thank you for the little miracle you made that is The Bulldog.

So please take down your ad blockers for this website so we can continue to bring you local news and opinion at no charge.

Ken Gray

Please note: We have left open the comment box below to ask why you use an ad-blocker on The Bulldog, if you do. Your response would help us to improve the reader experience on this website. Thank you.

Personally, I find ads annoying, but I’m too lazy to figure out how to install an ad blocker so just keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll be happy.

  2. Ken Gray says:

Merrill nobody especially likes ads but if you don’t at least acknowledge them I have to mug you on the street or break into your house and steal your change jar. It’s that desperate old boy. A person must cover his expenses somehow. Cheating on my taxes isn’t enough.

I like the ads better than the other options you suggest. Have a happy Christmas.

Happy Christmas to you, Merrill. Your input to The Bulldog is much appreciated.

    cheers
