Rough Golf Security Guard Should Get Job Knitting

Here’s my response to a comment from a person Drew who took issue with my stand at the violence at the end of the Canadian Open. I think I rather turned it into a post rather than a comment.

Drew:

Thank you for your view.

Tell me, when did it become practice that when someone is doing something as horribly dangerous as spraying champagne on a winner of a golf tournament he becomes deserving of a vicious tackle?

Mister Bad Judgment looked as though he was interested in doing a beat-down as soon as someone stepped out of line. You know, this isn’t the first time someone has won a big event and had champagne sprayed on him. That’s rather common practice. Hadwin could have been badly hurt.

It was a stupid thing to do no matter who was on the end of the tackle. Even the U.S. announcer said something to the effect of they don’t fool around up here. And this was coming from a person from a country where they don’t fool around.

Golf Security Guard Should Be Talking To A Judge

Hadwin showed an extraordinary amount of patience with that beast. So too his wife. The guard beat down on a little guy like the bully that he is. No doubt the Hadwins are better people than me but my reaction had I taken that hit would be to tell the police to press charges. And maybe get a note or two from my lawyer. That’s assault.

If you think Canadians should be accepting of assault anywhere, let alone with the world watching, you might want to reconsider your position.

What was wrong with saying to Hadwin don’t spray the champagne? Being Canadian, he would have stopped, not that he was doing anything wrong. How do you get 100 Canadians out of a swimming pool? You ask nicely. What’s wrong with nicely? That said, the image of Canadians being so polite is getting out of hand. We have our appropriate number of idiots in this country just like in other countries. I’ve met them. They’re dangerous and stupid.

As for a talk with a judge, it might do Mister Hair Trigger some good. Doubtful the judge would do anything but dismiss the charges and give a scary lecture or sentence the guard to community service, but that man needs a lesson in possibly not hitting people. As stupid as his judgment was, he probably needs a good talking to. You can’t make him any smarter but even bullies understand the consequences of stupid actions. That way, if he does it again, the next judge will know his background and serve proper judgment.

Hadwin has the U.S. Open this week. As Nick Taylor said in the post-tourney press conference, he hoped Hadwin didn’t have any broken ribs.

Canadian Open officials need to be much more careful about who they hire for security at such events. If that’s the kind of judgment Canadian officials show, no wonder we hadn’t won our own open title for 69 years.

It appears the worst behaviour by the tens of thousands of Canadians at the tourney was by the authorities. It ruined a great sporting moment for me and no doubt others. And in that historic moment, it will be spoiled by the video of that hit over and over again into golfing history.

If your teacher hit you like that if you were spraying water around a classroom, Mr. or Ms. Teacher would be fired pronto. I had a shop teacher back in the dark ages of public school who had been a military man and pinned a very badly behaved student against a wall. Didn’t hurt him. The next week we had a new shop teacher. Imagine what would happen in politically correct Canada now.

What that knuckle-dragger guard did was major-league stupid. He should not be in charge of administering any crowd. He can’t administer himself.

In fact, he should be looking for another line of work … saying knitting though I’m not sure I’d trust him with those needles.

cheers

kgray
