The Argument For A City Night Mayor

It’s our opinion at The Bulldog that the City of Ottawa must return to delivering the basics and cut back on the frills.

When the city can do the basics correctly again, perhaps then we can look at some of the frills. Furthermore, these failed mega-projects are costing taxpayers far too much money and debt. The night mayor project to build the nightlife economy is a frill. As well, the city has no expertise in this field and can screw up areas of responsibility where it does supposedly have expertise.

Ottawa Needs A Civic Revolution: DOUCET

To The Bulldog, the night mayor project is another frill which is likely to fail.

That said, there is an opposing view:

Growing up in a small town in Brazil, my daily life was shaped by the rhythms of my family’s working hours. My father has been a night shift worker for over three decades at a local factory. We got used to silent days and busy nights, noticing how our lives weren’t in sync with those of our neighbors.

After all those years, my fascination with the night as a separate, habitable world became a research project as a Mellon Fellow at McGill University. Then it became an opportunity to work with local governments and communities on nightlife policies.

From June 2020 to November 2022, I was a member of the MTL 24/24’s first Night Council in Montreal, where I contributed to data research and policies for nighttime governance.

While trying to understand nocturnal life, two main questions emerged: Why should cities govern themselves after dark? How can they responsibly do so?

    Hey Ken,

You might want to reconsider, why stop at Night Mayor? Let’s hire a Climate Change Mayor, Recycle Mayor, Housing Mayor, Landsdowne Mayor, LRT Mayor and while we’re at it why not hire a Mayor Mayor.

    K

    These are interesting options.

What does the Mayor Mayor do?

    cheers

  3. Kosmo says:

Well that’s obvious, she/he will provide leadership to the other Mayors. She/He will be head of the mayor council

  4. Annette Goldenberg says:

The City of Ottawa needs a “night” mayor like we all need a hole in our heads. Who ever thought of this ridiculous idea should go see a shrink.

Operations always get in trouble when they get too far away from their knitting.

Corel was doing very well thank you until it decided to take on Microsoft and then discovered eventually it didn’t know what it was doing.

They purchased an old page-making program the same day that the Citizen dropped that program for a much better QuarkXPress.

If Corel had stuck to what it did best, imagine what a huge company it would be if it had just stuck to being the biggest design program on the PC side.

The city knows nothing about entertainment except how to get into trouble. It can’t do the things it’s supposed to do like transit let alone to get into the entertainment field that is much more complicated than our councillors can even imagine.

I know what I’m talking about. I was responsible for entertainment at the Winnipeg Free Press for seven years. These people have no idea about the business, technical, touring and artistic acumen that is needed to operate the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and its school.

This night mayor business is an enormous mistake sponsored by a group of people who have just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

    cheers

    kgray
