Transpo Trying To Hide Cancellations: READER

Bulldog reader Cliff looks at the implications of OC Transpo’s notification changes:

OC Transpo could easily create a website with cancellations that people could look at or that third party apps could use to send out notices.  Or OC Transpo could have their app send out cancellations.  The email OC Transpo Alerts are terrible as you get the notice well after your bus or train has not showed up.

Excuses Run Wild But Young Bear Still Dead: MULVIHILL

Thanks for this article, this is basically hiding how many bus and train cancellations there are a day.
Fun fact, that Friday when it was -20C a few weeks back, there were 150 bus cancellations – we will never know this info again.

The change is required because Twitter is now charging per tweet for access to the API. The bots would cost 20-40,000 per month under the change. (Tweets in the manual way are currently still free.)

Yes, you should switch to using the Transit App. It is a Canadian company located in Montreal. It works in many major cities in the work. It uses the data feeds that the City of Ottawa provides to provide real-time updates. It works on both iOs and Android.

    Miranda:

    Thank you for this.

We mentioned that Miranda though I’m doubtful that was the reason. Probably a good reason they’ve been going to make the change and now they have an excuse.

I don’t trust the city as far as I can throw city hall.

OC Transpo isn’t the only ones no longer post trip cancellation alerts on Twitter.

New York City Transit (MTA) has also announced that they will no longer using Twitter to provide service updates.

    Jan:

I’ve heard so many lies from the city over the last 12 years that I look at everything with a jaundiced eye.

Perhaps the difference between the MTA and Transpo is that New York’s system has less to cover up and they love to cover up on Laurier Avenue.

If they spent as much time doing a good job as they do covering up or lying or lying by omission, maybe things would run a lot better.

    cheers
