    Campaign promises are made to attract votes. Once the votes have been cast, so too are the promises. Cast aside.

    We need a new approach to campaign “promises”. Candidates need to sign a contract with their promises set out in it and fixed timelines for their achievement. The other party to the contract would be the residents of Ottawa. If the individual receives enough votes to take office, the contract becomes legally binding. The final signing could be part of the swearing-in ceremony.

    There would be consequences for non-delivery ranging from fines to removal from office. Maybe if people knew that a campaign promise is something they should take seriously and would be held to, they’d think twice before promising the sky and delivering a cloud.

    I know it’s not going to happen but it’s nice to dream from time to time. Imagine politicians being beholden to their constituents and not their donors and the back-room boys …
